Ashby R. Hackney

Ashby has over seventeen years of experience in the commercial real estate industry as an acquisition partner, asset manager, investment banker and attorney. His experience includes the acquisition, financing, management, leasing and disposition of office, retail and industrial properties.

Prior to founding HREP, Ashby was an Acquisition Partner with Perrine & Wheeler where he was responsible for sourcing and closing on acquisitions in the Southeast region of the United States. Prior to becoming an Acquisition Partner, Ashby was the Vice President of Asset Management for Perrine & Wheeler where he was responsible for the asset management of the company’s $300 million portfolio. As Vice President of Asset Management, Ashby was also responsible for the disposition of over $14 million of assets resulting in average annual returns to investors of 13.5% to 20%.

After receiving his MBA, Ashby joined Wachovia Securities’ real estate investment banking group where he assisted public and private clients with their acquisition, disposition and financing needs. While with Wachovia his responsibilities included analyzing potential mergers between retail real estate investment trusts, assisting a private equity firm with the sourcing of equity and debt financing to recapitalize several office assets, and the valuation and marketing of an office and industrial portfolio for sale to a public real estate investment trust.

Prior to joining Wachovia, Ashby was an associate attorney in the commercial real estate group of Troutman Sanders LLP (formerly known as Mays & Valentine, LLP) where he was responsible for working with corporate clients with regard to their real estate needs. His specific responsibilities included the drafting and negotiating of office and retail leases, both from a landlord and a tenant perspective, the sale and acquisition of developed and undeveloped property, conducting due diligence on and negotiating finance documents for the acquisition of commercial properties, and addressing other general commercial real estate issues for large corporate clients.

Ashby is a cum laude graduate of Washington and Lee University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in European History and French. He is also a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor degree and of the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia where he earned his Master of Business Administration degree. He has also passed both the Series 7 and Series 63 NASD licensing exams.
